Description: The Cummings Engineering Factory represents a post-modern design.  The landscape architect was James Hope of Landesign Group.  Structural engineers Ove Arup & Partners.  Set within a modern designed landscape, sunken in part at factory level with various pyramidal shaped hills using excavated material to form screening and a shelter belt at the eastern perimeter.  Speaking about the project to ECA students, James Hope described how he’d prepared a clay model to convey the geometric landforms to the client and design team.  The landforms were inspired by the bings which were once a dominant feature within the central belt of Scotland.  He explained how the geometric landforms also referenced the engineering process undertaken within the factory.

Significance: The building is considered to be one of most significant and important examples of large industrial buildings in later 20th century Britain and is ABK’s principal work of the 1970s in the United Kingdom.

A site visit in 2018 confirmed that the factory and surrounding landscape are sadly derelict and unmanaged.  The landforms retain their shape, however soft rush has colonised the grass sward, which diminishes the crispness of the geometric forms.
